This study-unit engages participants and organisations with developing practices that support working with older persons in an efficient and ethical manner; and in a framework of asset-based sustainable development, intergenerational and lifelong education for active ageing.

Study-unit Aims

  • Sensitize participants to assets, issues, problems and limitations that distinguish (specific cohorts of) older adults; and
  • Support service providers in close contact with older adults with professional development and capacity-building that dwells on asset-based, intergenerational and lifelong education for active ageing.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Describe basic principles of asset-based, lifelong and intergenerational education that fosters active ageing;
  • List characteristics, assets and needs that distinguish (specific cohorts of) older adults from other service users / social cohorts;
  • List approaches and skills that can be deployed with (specific cohorts) of older adults in a given organsational / service-provision setting; and
  • Describe steps which, a service provider can take when alarmed by the possibility that an older adult might be experiencing (or be at risk of) abuse (e.g., of cyber fraud, domestic and interpersonal violence, material poverty, social exclusion, etc.).

Learning Outcomes: Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Use an asset-based lifelong and intergenerational education for active ageing perspective to review case scenarios of procedures undertaken when servicing (specific cohorts of) older adults; and
  • Apply procedural measures that can be undertaken when suspecting that an older adult might be experiencing (or be at risk of) abuse.
